In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, marking its return to power in the national capital after nearly three decades. The BJP won 48 of the 70 assembly seats in the elections held on February 5, 2025, crossing the majority mark of 36 seats. This significant victory ousted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had been heading the government in Delhi since 2015. The AAP’s representation in the Assembly dropped to 22 seats, a sharp contrast to its previous tally of 62 seats in the 2020 elections. Notably, key AAP leaders, including party chief Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia, faced defeat in their respective constituencies. The Indian National Congress continued its decline in Delhi politics, failing to secure any seat for the third consecutive assembly election. However, its vote share saw a marginal increase compared to the previous elections.Voter turnout was recorded at over 60% out of 15 million eligible voters, indicating a strong participation in the democratic process.Following the election results, AAP leader Atishi resigned as Delhi’s Chief Minister.
The BJP’s campaign resonated with promises to enhance public services, including education and healthcare, and to revive the Yamuna river, aiming to restore it as a symbol of Delhi’s heritage. Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to voters and emphasised the party’s commitment to fulfilling these promises. This electoral result is expected to foster a more harmonious relationship between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor’s office, potentially leading to more streamlined governance in the capital. The results of the 2025 Delhi Assembly election signal a significant shift in the city’s political landscape, with the BJP poised to implement its vision for Delhi’s development and address the aspirations of its residents.
